The DMSE Foundation, founded by Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray, launched its RUNNING IN PLACES (RIP) program in May of 2010. Students from the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Jamaica Plain participated in the "pilot" RIP adventure to the University of Massachusetts campus in Boston, MA.
Students were accompanied by teacher chaperones and Physical Education Instructor Tony Robinson. Commenting on the RIP event, Robinson stated "The RIP field trip to UMass was amazing from start to finish. It was definitely a learning experience that our students will never forget. "
RIP combines the benefits of physical activity with visits to educational destinations throughout the greater Boston area.
The goal of RIP is to help students:
- Increase their level of physical activity
- Develop a desire for personal health
- Strive for academic excellence
- Build character, confidence and self-esteem
