$10,000 Raised for Rock Wall Project at Galvin's Plansky Gym January 30, 2008

Thanks to scores of donations
WAKEFIELD - The Physical Education Department at the Galvin Middle School continues to find new and innovative ways to motivate our kids and helps improve their overall fitness level.
The rate of obesity in children is on the rise in our society. Obesity tripled from 1975 to 2004, which put children at risk for hypertension, diabetes, asthma, liver and kidney disease and more. The Galvin Middle School is excited to have taken part in a special fund raising effort to support the addition of an indoor rock climbing wall (at the Plansky Gymnasium), said Galvin Physical Education teacher Janel Stevenson. The rock climbing wall will benefit both the students at the Galvin Middle School and the Wakefield community at large by providing new and innovative ways to improve physical fitness, muscular strength, and self-esteem for our children, she added.
The Physical Education Department and the Galvin Middle School has been working on this fundraising effort for almost two years. The DMSE (Dave McGillivray Sports Enterprise) Children's Fitness FOundation has partnered with the town of Wakefield and the Galvin Middle School to help organize and raise funds for the project. Billy Sheehan, Managing Director of this foundation has been instrumental in helping turn this goal into reality.
With the help of Billy Sheehan and the town of Wakefield, we are happy to announce that we have raised the amount of $10,000 to purchase this wall, said Stevenson. At the Jan. 8 School Committee Meeting, Sheehan presented the check to the Galvin Middle School, and to the groups surprise, donated the remaining balance of $1,500 to complete their goal. The New England 65-Plus Runners Club also contributed a total of $2,000 towards the project as a result of the Galvin 5K Run For All Ages Road Race that takes place at each fall at the lake. The PTO of the Galvin Middle School, teachers, and parents are also to be thanked for their generosity towards this effort, noted Stevenson.
